Simultaneous and Consecutive
Simultaneous interpreters generally sit in a cabin listening to the conversation and translating in real time for others to listen to on headphones. This is particularly common or useful at Conferences or Summits. This is a highly skilled profession and these interpreters are specially trained.
Simultaneous translation requires equipment to work effectively, with the interpreter(s) generally sitting in sound proof cabins listening and delegates listened via headphones.
As simultaneous interpreters translate constantly, they do not have the luxury to miss words, ask to repeat or wait - it requires high concentration and is very tiring, therefore interpreters generally swap every 30 minutes, or work non-stop for a maximum of 3 hours.
Consecutive Interpretation
This is more common and suitable for small groups or 1-2-1 meetings where the translation is performed after one or several sentences of the speaker. The interpreter listens to the conversation, waits and then repeats back in other language. As these interpreters repeat after the speaking has stopped, it is slower and more time consuming but more suitable for conversations rather listening to a speaker. While it requires concentration, it is less tiring than simultaneous interpreting and they have a chance to ask for words to be repeated if they didn't quite catch something.
